Autograph letter signed from Earl George Macartney, London, to the Honorable Edmond Malone, London [manuscript], 1799 June 2.

Macartney tells Malone to turn to Burke's speech in which he delineates the characters of My Lord Chatham, W. Grenville and Charles Townshend. He thinks that Burke must have just come from reading Dryden's essay on Dramatic poetry. There is a note at the bottom of the letter in another hand (possibly Malone's?) that describes the context of the letter to Malone.

A member of an old Scots-Irish family, Macartney studied at Trinity College (M.A., 1759) in Dublin. He was knighted and appointed envoy extraordinary to Russia in 1764 and, on his return, entered Parliament, becoming chief secretary for Ireland (1769-72).
